Russ
Foundation is set in a rural location where cultivated
field and orchards meet hills of rock and scrub. The
Foundation owns twenty acres of land which it puts to
good use in promoting some self-sufficiency and providing
a lush and well-maintained environment in which people
work and live.
Integral
to the long-term programme of Russ Foundation is the
idea that the physical setting of the project should
reflect as sound a use of resources as is to be found
in other areas of its work. The farm provides training
in land and animal husbandry, and also provides some
employment for local people. Crops raised include mangoes,
coconuts, bananas, pineapples and pulses. Small plantations
of teak and rubber trees have also been established.
In
1997 poultry and dairy farms were completed. The twelve
cow dairy farm was built with the aid of funds provided
by students in Colchester, England, who also helped
dig the foundations for the building during a three
week visit over Christmas 1996.
